Snade Mill View from N showing waterwheel and geared sluice-operating mechanism

SC 450622

Description Snade Mill View from N showing waterwheel and geared sluice-operating mechanism

Date 29/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450622

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Snade Mill, Dumfriesshire This is a two storey rubble building on an L-plan, with a double-pile range housing the mill, which has one pair of stones remaining. The mill was driven by a low-breast paddle wheel 1.14 by 4.88m, with its sluice controlled by a system of gearing. This view shows the geared mechanism for raising and lowering the sluice, on the right, with the large low-breast wheel to the left. The geared sluice control here is probably unique.
