Dumfries, Old Bridge View from NNE

SC 450382

Description Dumfries, Old Bridge View from NNE

Date 28/8/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 450382

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Devorgilla's Bridge, Dumfries, Dumfriesshire This is one of the most important medieval bridges in Scotland, though it has been significantly altered. The eastern half was rebuilt in 1620, and three spans at the east end were demolished in 1794 when Whitesands was widened as a market place. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with the semicircular arches and massive piers with triangular cutwaters demonstrating its early origin. Note that there is a pedestrian refuge above the central cutwater. This bridge is now a footbridge only. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
