Scope and Content Salisbury Crags fort, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh Holyrood Park contains the remains of four prehistoric fortifications. None has been securely dated, but this is the largest and perhaps the oldest. We know that forts such as this were in use around the turn of the millennium BC/AD. The fort is defined today by a low grassy bank which may be seen running down the middle of the picture. This would originally have been much higher with a base of stone and topped with a timber palisade. There is no sign of the original entrance. There are no clear features inside the fort, such as houses, but it would have been well suited for the protection of cattle as well as local families. Forts such as this may only have been in use periodically, when conditions demanded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
