Hilton, Windmill View from N

SC 446041

Description Hilton, Windmill View from N

Date 15/8/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 446041

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former threshing windmill, Hilton, near Ellon, Aberdeenshire This is an unusually fine example of a windmill built to power a threshing machine. Such mills were built where water power was not available, and where horse engines were not competitive. This view shows the stump of the windmill with the threshing barn behind. The platform at the top of the octagonal section of the tower was used for setting the canvas sails on the wooden frames which supported them. Almost all threshing windmills in Scotland are in east and north east Scotland. This is probably the finest survivor. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
