Scope and Content Girdleness Lighthouse, Aberdeenshire This lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson for the Northern Lighthouse Board. It has a tall circular-section tower, with corbelled galleries below lanterns at two levels. The keepers' houses and later engine room are flat-roofed. This view shows the lighthouse from the south. The two-tier lantern arrangement was short-lived, and the original square-paned upper lantern has been replaced by a triangular-paned one. The lower lantern retains its square panes. As with all the Northern Lighthouse Board's lights, this one has been converted to automatic operation. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
