Scope and Content St Leonard's Works, Dunfermline, Fife Dunfermline was the centre of Scotland's fine linen trade, and St Leonard's Works was one of its largest factories. The Site was dominated by a large three-storey Italianate ware-house and office block, with single-storey sheds behind. This view shows the main Italianate range, with its very refined detail. There was considerable architectural rivalry between the leading Dunfermline linen manufacturers: this one won hands down. This works closed in the 1960s, and was disused at the time this photograph was taken. The Italianate block has since been converted into flats without altering its external appearance, and the rest of the buildings demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
