Scope and Content Glasgow University Library and the Hunterian Gallery from the south-east, University of Glasgow, University Avenue, Glasgow Glasgow University Library was designed in 1961 and built 1965-81. The adjacent Hunterian Art Gallery adjacent was built 1971-81. Both buildings were designed by architect William Whitfield, and feature towering elements of hammer-dressed concrete and glass. The main tower of the library gained an extra glazed storey c.1992. This shows the library buildings identified by their tall central tower, and the structure known as 'The Hub' to the right (which houses the refectory, shops and a bank). The library is faced with concrete and glass and creates a focal point for the lower buildings around it due to the height of its various angular sections and its elevated position. This building uses a variety of concrete surfaces in its construction. These are intended to be seen in their own right, as raw surfaces. This style of building is known as Brutalism, and in this case the style is used to create a fortress-like, towering library. This building has been selected as one of Scotland's key 20th-century Modern architectural monuments. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
