Scope and Content Dailuaine Distillery, Banffshire This Scotch malt whisky distillery was founded in 1852. It was rebuilt in 1884-7, enlarged in the 1890s, partly rebuilt after a fire in 1917, and rebuilt and extended in 1959-60. It was one of the largest Highland malt distilleries of the 19th century. This view shows the distillery from the row of workers' houses on the hillside above. The buildings on the left are warehouses, probably of the 1880s. The main production buildings are beyond, with the by-product recovery - dark grains - plant beyond. Dailuaine was one of a handful of malt whisky distilleries with its own branch railway line, worked by its own steam locomotive, an indication of the scale of its operations.
