Portvasgo, Harbour View of general harbour area from W, crab winch in foreground

SC 440321

Description Portvasgo, Harbour View of general harbour area from W, crab winch in foreground

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 440321

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Fishing station, Port Vasgo, Sutherland This is a small beach-fishing station, probably exploiting a natural rift in the outcropping shore rocks to make a sheltered haven for small boats. At the head of the rift is a former cottage, and the ruins of other buildings. This view shows the haven, probably part natural, part man-made, which forms the port. On the left is the cast iron crab winch used to haul boats on to the beach. This could well be a 'clearance' settlement made to provide employment for people displaced from inland areas in Sutherland. Kelping may have been practised as well as fishing.
