Scope and Content Coroghan Barn and Castle, Canna, Highland, from west In the foreground is Coroghon Barn which dates to the late 18th century. The two-storeyed rectangular building is constructed of rubble and has a slated roof. The barn stands in a field near Coroghon Bay, and is surrounded by drystone dykes. Behind the barn is Coroghon Castle, which is situated on a stack which juts out into the sea. In 1772 Thomas Pennant visited the castle and in his book 'Tour in Scotland and Voyage to the Hebrides', wrote 'on one side is a little tower at a vast height above us, accessible by a narrow and horrible path: it seems so small as scarce to be able to contain half a dozen people'. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
