Scope and Content Coroghon Barn and Castle, Canna, Highland, from west To the right of this view is Coroghon Barn which dates to the late 18th century. It was built for Hector MacNeill, who carried out various improvements whilst he was tenant of part of the land on Canna. Much of Canna is relatively flat, but a high stack is visible towards the centre of the image. On the left end of the stack is Coroghon Castle, a rectangular tower which dates to the 17th century. The castle is believed to have been used as a refuge and possibly also as a prison. Canna is one of the most westerly of the Small Isles and is situated to the north-west of Rhum. The island is low-lying and is a mixture of fertile ground, bog and moorland. In 1981 Canna was gifted to The National Trust for Scotland by Dr J L Campbell. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
