Scope and Content Location of ironworks in southern Scotland The advantages of locating an ironworks at Muirkirk were the ready availability of cheap raw materials: ironstone, limestone, coal and the coke that was a by-product of the existing tarworks. Muirkirk iron became renowned for its high quality. Muirkirk was one of several major ironworks in existence in southern Scotland at the end of the 18th century. Others were established near the Rivers Clyde, Devon and Carron, at Glenbuck near Muirkirk, and at Omoa and Wilsontown. The manufacture of iron on a grand scale was an essential part of the Industrial Revolution in Scotland as elsewhere in Britain. The remains of the mining landscape surviving at Muirkirk provide a remarkable glimpse of this aspect of Scotland's economy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
