Detail of crane in goods yard and bridge in background at Dingwall Railway Station loking north.

SC 435143

Description Detail of crane in goods yard and bridge in background at Dingwall Railway Station loking north.

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435143

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dingwall Station, Ross and Cromarty This station was on the Inverness and Ross-shire Railway, opened to Dingwall in 1862. This station was built in 1886, and is similar in style to Pitlochry and Nairn, which were rebuilt a little later. This view shows a cast iron hand-crane in the goods yard. Such cranes were common in goods yards in the Victorian period, but were rare by the 1970s. Since this photograph was taken the crane has been scrapped, and the site of the goods yard has been developed for housing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
