Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Scope and Content Hemp and linen works, Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty This unique complex was established by local landowner George Ross to increase the rent from his burgh of Cromarty. It consisted of a quadrangle of two-storey sandstone rubble buildings, with a fifth block dividing the courtyard into two. This view shows the site of the front range in the foreground, with the cut-back remains of the north range on the left, and part of the ropewalk on the right. The north range was probably a handloom weaving shop. The complex was designed to make hemp ropes and linen sailcloth by hand methods. The maritime trade of the area, before significant road improvement, was important. Ross did his best to secure prosperity for Cromarty, but it was short-lived. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
