Scope and Content Hemp and linen works, Cromarty, Ross and Cromarty This unique complex was established by local landowner George Ross to increase the rent from his burgh of Cromarty. It consisted of a quadrangle of two-storey sandstone rubble buildings, with a fifth block dividing the courtyard into two. This view shows the site of the front range in the foreground, with the ropewalk in the left background, an hosese and a workshop on the right, the building in the middle was probably a warehouse. The front block was demolished in 1973. The complex was designed to make hemp ropes and linen sailcloth by hand methods. The maritime trade of the area, before significant road improvement, was important. Ross did his best to secure prosperity for Cromarty, but it was short-lived. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
