Conon Bridge Railway Viaduct General View

SC 435006

Description Conon Bridge Railway Viaduct General View

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 435006

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Conon Viaduct, Conon Bridge, Ross and Cromarty This viaduct was built for the Inverness & Ross-shire Railway, and designed by Joseph Mitchell. It has four long segmental-arched spans, all of which are skewed. This view shows the viaduct from the south east. The unusual way in which the skewing of the arches is achieved is obvious: each span consists of four separate, stepped arch rings. Mitchell adopted this unusual design because local masons did not have the skill to cut the stones which make up the spiral courses of the arch rings of an orthodox skew bridge.
