SC 432817

Description Eyemouth, Harbour General view from NE

Date 1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 432817

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Eyemouth Harbour, Eyemouth, Berwickshire This harbour at the mouth of the Eye Water was formed in 1768 by John Smeaton, and rebuilt subsequently, notably in 1885-7 by Thomas Meik & Son, after a fishing-boat disaster. This view shows the harbour from the south east, looking upriver. The river has been canalised to run to the side of the basin. It joins the basin behind the lifeboat on the left. Eyemouth became, and remains, an important port for the fisheries of the North Sea. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
