Scope and Content Limekilns, Rutherford Mains, Deepsykehead, near Carlops, Peebles-shire The quarries here were on a large scale, for these are substantial kilns. This view shows the bank of two two-draw kilns, which have semicircular draw arches similar to those of the single kiln nearby at Macbiehill. The kilns were loaded with limestone and coal from the top and the burnt lime taken out of the kilns through the draw arches. Having two arches per kiln allowed the kiln to be emptied more quickly than with one arch. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
