Scope and Content Former ferry pier, South Alloa, near Airth, Stirlingshire The ferry across the river Forth from Alloa to South Alloa was an early one, but fell out of use after a railway crossing nearby was opened in the 1880s. This view shows the ramped ferry pier at the south end of the crossing, with its mixed timber and masonry construction. Alloa is in the background, dominated by the gasholder and glassworks. Until the 1880s, there were no bridges across the Forth east of Stirling. This was one of the four major ferry crossings, the others being at Kincardine, Queensferry, and Granton to Burntisland.
