Scope and Content Drawing showing plan of fortifications at Dùn Athad, Islay, Argyll and Bute The fortifications at Dùn Athad lie on a rocky promontory on the south-western tip of Islay's Oa peninsula, c.2km south-east of the Mull of Oa. The site occupies a linear platform 90m in length and varying between 6m and 23m in width. This plan shows the layout of the site. The entrance is at the north (top), with a narrow ridge 2m wide leading to the forework and building A. There is much evidence of rig cultivation, and an oval depression at C may have been a well or cistern. There may have been fortifications on this site since prehistoric or Early Historic times, but the existing remains appear to date from the 16th or early 17th century. It may have been a beacon-stance for supporters of Sir James MacDonald in 1615. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
