Scope and Content View of ruined buildings at Finlaggan Castle, Islay, Argyll and Bute Loch Finlaggan lies c.1.5km north-west of Ballygrant on Islay. The remains of a castle and associated buildings occupy two small islands at the north-east end of the loch: Eilean Mór, meaning 'great isle'; and Eilean na Comhairle, meaning 'council isle'. Most of the late medieval buildings are reduced to the lower courses of their walls, but there are two relatively well-preserved buildings on Eilean Mór, one of which is seen in the foreground here. Eilean na Comhairle can be seen in the background. This building was probably a service range to the main castle. A stone causeway links the two islands, and there are still traces visible. The buildings on Eilean na Comhairle are thought to have included a meeting-place for the Council of the Isles. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
