Scope and Content Old Playhouse Close, Canongate, Edinburgh The Close takes its name from the Playhouse Theatre established here in 1747 and which became 'the cradle of legitimate drama in Scotland'. It closed in 1786. The Close, with a restored 17th-century tenement and turreted stair tower at the rear, was where, in 1756, John Home's 'Douglas', a now forgotten work, was first performed in 1756, causing a scandal because it was written by a minister of the Kirk. In the 18th century, the Church of Scotland and the City Magistrates of Edinburgh strongly disapproved of theatre in general, fearing it would 'inflame the minds' of ordinary people.
