Scope and Content Pend arch at Riddle's Court, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Riddle's Court was named after George Riddell, wright and burgess of the city who lived here in the 18th century. A pend on the south side leads to an inner courtyard, Riddle's Close, enclosed on four sides by a house called Bailie McMorran's House. The pend arch is part of Bailie McMorran's House, a grand 16th-century mansion. Underneath the armorial panel, the carved inscription by S Henbest Capper reads 'Vivendo Discimis' ('we learn by living together'), the motto of Patrick Geddes. Patrick Geddes, the Victorian pioneer of town planning, opened a students' residence for Edinburgh University in Riddle's Court in 1887. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
