Scope and Content Painted ceiling in Gladstone's Land, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Gladstone's Land was built c.1620, incorporating a 16th-century building, for Thomas Gledstanes, merchant and burgess of the city. It is a fine example of a tenement or 'land' with many features characteristic of Scottish architecture of the period. The timber for this oak ceiling is said to have come from James IV's warship, 'The Great Michael' which was broken up in the early 17th century. It is painted with fruit, flowers and birds, and a red kite or 'gled', a play on the name Gledstanes. Painted ceilings, many using timbers from the Baltic, were common in Scotland in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Dutch and French engravings often provided inspiration for Scottish painters who were itinerant craftsmen. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
