Scope and Content Plan of the first floor, Gladstone's Land, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Gladstone's Land was built c.1620, incorporating a 16th-century building, for Thomas Gledstanes, merchant and burgess of the city. It is a fine example of a tenement or 'land' with many features characteristic of Scottish architecture of the period. The room facing the Lawnmarket is a 17th-century addition to the earlier 16th-century house. It was further extended over ground-floor arcades to make best use of limited space. Entry to the first-floor rooms was by an external stair from the street. In the 17th century the tenements or 'Lands' of the Old Town were divided into flats, each occupied by a family. Different social classes lived 'cheek by jowl', the richer tenants living on the first and second floors, and the poorest in the attics. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
