Scope and Content Rear view of Gladstone's Land from Lady Stair's Close, Lawnmarket, Edinburgh Gladstone's Land was built c.1620, incorporating a 16th-century building, for Thomas Gledstanes, merchant and burgess of the city. It is a fine example of a tenement or 'land' with many features characteristic of Scottish architecture of the period. The crowstepped gable of the house, the large 'lum' or chimney, and the dormer windows in the roof are all characteristic of a 17th-century townhouse. In the 17th century, the burgesses of Edinburgh owned narrow enclosed plots of land bordering Lawnmarket on which they built their houses. The parts covered by buildings were called 'Lands'. 'Closes' or lanes gave access to the 'back lands'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
