Scope and Content Avon Viaduct, Avonbridge, Stirlingshire This viaduct was built by the Monkland Railways Company. This view shows a span of the viaduct, which spans the river Avon and its flood plain, It is built of sandstone ashlar, and strengthened by tie-rods linking cast iron tieplates (not old rails, as stated in the reference below). This is a fine example of a viaduct constructed to the high standards set in Scotland by John Miller, doyen of Scotland's early railway engineers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
