Westfield, Avon Viaduct View from SE

SC 424425

Description Westfield, Avon Viaduct View from SE

Date 6/4/1974

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 424425

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Avon Viaduct, Avonbridge, Stirlingshire This viaduct was built by the Monkland Railways Company. This view shows the viaduct, which spans the river Avon and its flood plain, with its 14 main spans. It is built of sandstone ashlar, and strengthened by tie-rods linking cast iron tieplates (not old rails, as stated in the reference below). This is a fine example of a viaduct constructed to the high standards set in Scotland by John Miller, doyen of Scotland's early railway engineers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
