Scope and Content Preserved horse-engine house, Newhouse Farm Steading, Dunbar, East Lothian Horse engines were used in agriculture to drive threshing machines, which supplanted hand threshing from the 1780s. The engines were initially made of wood, and houses such as this one were built to protect them from the weather. This view shows a typical east coast style of construction, with a polygonal pantiled roof supported on stone piers. The threshing machine was in the barn on the left. This engine house was restored by East Lothian County Council, who also installed the information boards seen in this view. The county planning officer, Frank Tindall, was a pioneer of the conservation of vernacular. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
