Scope and Content Newbattle (Esk, Dalhousie) viaduct, Midlothian This viaduct replaced an earlier iron one when the North British Railway built the Hawick Branch, later part of the Waverley Route from Edinburgh to Carlisle. This view shows the 23-span viaduct from the south east. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, apart from 22 of the arch rings, which are of brick The arch on the right is on a skew, and has a masonry arch ring. The area round the viaduct has been extensively mined for coal, and the piers of the structure have been braced with steel rails to limit the effects of any subsidence.
