Scope and Content Drawing showing cross-base slab at Kilnave Chapel, Islay, Argyll and Bute A late medieval chapel stands at Kilnave on the west shore of Loch Gruinart on Islay's north coast. Although the chapel has been roofless for several centuries, the walls are still relatively intact. A 19th-century wall encloses the burial-ground. A number of Early Christian and medieval grave-slabs survive in the burial-ground. This is one of two grooved slabs which originally formed the base of a cross here. This drawing shows the lower slab which was found 0.45m below the ground in 1981. This slab bears a central socket surrounded by a groove forming a border 0.14-0.18m from the edge of the stone. Probably dating from the 8th century, the two slabs may have supported the cross with vertical slabs fitted into the groove between them. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
