Scope and Content Detail of inscribed panel above entrance doorway to Ruvaal Lighthouse, Islay, Argyll and Bute Ruvaal Lighthouse stands on the headland at the northern entrance to the Sound of Islay. Erected in 1857-9 for the Northern Lighthouse Board, it was designed by the engineers David and Thomas Stevenson. This plaque is located above the main entrance to the lighthouse on the west elevation. It commemorates the date 1857, and the names of the engineers, the contractor A MacDonald, and the inspector D Matthew. The lighthouse tower is constructed of lime-washed brick, with plain sandstone dressings for the windows and doorways. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
