Scope and Content View from west showing Ruvaal Lighthouse, Islay, Argyll and Bute Ruvaal Lighthouse stands on the headland at the northern entrance to the Sound of Islay. Erected in 1857-9 for the Northern Lighthouse Board, it was designed by the engineers David and Thomas Stevenson. The lighthouse tower is constructed of lime-washed brick, with plain sandstone dressings for the windows and doorways. To the south-west of the tower are the single-storeyed keepers' cottages, originally two separate domestic units and a store. An investigation into the lighthouse service by a Royal Commission in 1859-61 described the newly completed accommodation at Ruvaal as being 'more like dog kennels than anything else'. The cottages were altered and upgraded in 1959-60. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
