Scope and Content Paper coating machine at the Cartside Mills of Smith & McLaurin, Milliken Park, Renfrewshire This machine was used to coat paper with a liquid suspension of solid particles. After drying, the paper was then suitable for high- quality printing. This view shows the wet end of the machine, with the paper to be coated on the reel at the front. Note that the machine is driven by a complex system of belts. The Cartside Mills were built in about 1790 for cotton spinning, and was adapted for paper coating by Smith & McLaurin, who added to the original mill building. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
