Scope and Content Front of J & J Wilson's Greenhead Mills, Newmilns, Ayrshire, from the north east The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. In the 1880s 'madras' cloth was introduced to complement machine lace, this weaving shed was built for weaving this product. This view shows the glazed-brick front of the madras-weaving shop. The ornamental use of coloured brick is most unusual. The frontage of the building is tall enough to conceal the ridges of the 'north light' sheds behind. J & J Wilson established their works in1877. They were one of the many small family firms who made the Irvine Valley towns world-famous for lace manufacture by 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
