Scope and Content Bobbin winder for lace loom in J & J Wilson's Greenhead Mills, Newmilns, Ayrshire The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. The looms used bobbins to form the pattern, and these were wound with yarn as seen here. This view shows the strands of yarn being unwound from the drum on the left and guided on to a row of bobbins, mounted on a spindle, on the right. They will then go to the loom, where they can be moved sideways to make the lace pattern J & J Wilson established their works in1877, and made 'Madras', another type of 'lace' curtain. They were one of the many small family firms who made the Irvine Valley towns world-famous for lace manufacture by 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
