Scope and Content Lace loom in J & J Wilson's Greenhead Mills, Newmilns, Ayrshire, showing lace curtain being woven The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. Wide looms like this were developed later. Patterns were determined by a punched card system above the loom. This view shows the point in the loom where the weft threads, wound on bobbins, are twisted round the warp (longitudinal) threads to form the pattern seen at the top. J & J Wilson established their works in1877, and made 'Madras', another type of 'lace' curtain. They were one of the many small family firms who made the Irvine Valley towns world-famous for lace manufacture by 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
