Scope and Content Lace loom in J & J Wilson's Greenhead Mills, Newmilns, Ayrshire The manufacture of machine-made lace curtains and tablecloths was introduced into the Irvine Valley in the 1870s. Wide looms like this were developed later. Patterns were determined by a punched card system above the loom. This view shows the size of the loom, and how it fits into the weaving shed. The finished cloth is wound on to the roller on top of the loom. Above this are the control threads from the punched card (Jacquard) mechanism. J & J Wilson established their works in1877, and made 'Madras', another type of 'lace' curtain. They were one of the many small family firms who made the Irvine Valley towns world-famous for lace manufacture by 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
