Scope and Content Lace loom in J & J Wilson's Greenhead Mills, Newmilns, Ayrshire This type of loom for weaving lace curtains and tablecloths was brought up from Nottingham in the late 1870s. The loom uses bobbins wound with yarn, instead of the shuttle(s) of a conventional loom, moving these bobbins sideways to twist the yarn round the warp strands to make the pattern, which is selected by the threads rising to the roof. At the time this photograph was taken this was one of the oldest lace looms in the Irvine valley, home of the Scottish machine-made lace industry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
