Scope and Content View of Kildalton House, Islay Kildalton House was built between 1867 and 1869 by John Burnet for John Ramsay MP, following plans by James Ingram in 1863. There were later additions and alterations by McKenzie and Moncur (1891), and Messenger and Co (1915). Built in the baronial style, with crowstepped gables and a tall central tower, the house would have provided an impressive symbol of the Ramsay family's wealth. By the 1970s, the house was empty, and as late as 1997 still lay in a derelict state. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
