Scope and Content Elevated view of Black House E, Village, St Kilda Black House E, was built in the 1860s and is a typical black house, that is a traditional Hebridian house with thick un-mortared walls and a thatched roof. Probably the last of its type, it was constructed for the newly-married Donald Ferguson. This is the view from uphill of the building which consists of two rooms built on a steep slope. Cattle were kept in the lower, south, room. Traces of a zinc roof have been found. These helped to keep the wind out but were notorious for leaking. In late 1860, a hurricane devastated St Kilda and in the next year the landlord sent craftsmen from the mainland to build new houses. Many of the older black houses remained in service, but no more were built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
