Scope and Content South end of Black House E, Village, St Kilda Black House E, was built in the 1860s and is a typical black house, that is a traditional Hebridian house with thick un-mortared walls and a thatched roof. Probably the last of its type, it was constructed for the newly-married Donald Ferguson. This shows the gable of the south room of the house. Inside, a tether ring and a connection to the drainage system show that this room was used as a byre. In late 1860, a hurricane devastated St Kilda and in the next year the landlord sent craftsmen from the mainland to build new houses. Many of the older black houses remained in service, but no more were built. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
