Scope and Content Map of Soay, St Kilda Soay, off the western tip of Hirta, is the one of the lesser islands of the St Kilda chain. Its name comes from the Norse 'Sheep Island'. The island's unique breed of sheep, the Soay Sheep, is a survival from the Bronze Age. This map shows the island's physical features. St Kilda was probably resettled by Norsemen who dominated the Hebrides from 800 until the 1260s. Several Norse place names survive from this period. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
