Scope and Content West front of Hopetoun House, West Lothian This shows the older part of the house, with its three-storeyed plus attic main block, and flanking wings, each with a central domed tower. A flight of steps leads up to the advanced entrance bays. Arcades with arches of clipped yew hedges can be seen at the both sides of the wings. The oval pool in the foreground has a central fountain which is operated on special occasions. The garden at Hopetoun is described in 'A Journey through Scotland' by J Macky in 1723: 'The Parterre fronting the Salloon...hath a large Bason of Water at Bottom; it is also adorned with a Multitude of Statues on Pedestals'. Formal gardens were a feature of most large estates, providing elegant walks for family and guests. Hopetoun House, the seat of the Marquis of Linlithgow, was built 1699-1704 to designs by architect Sir William Bruce (c.1630-1710). Between 1721 and 1748 architect William Adam (1689-1748), and his sons Robert (1728-92) and John (1721-92) designed extensions to the central block, flanked by curving colonnades leading to advanced pavilions containing stables (north) and a ballroom (south).
