Scope and Content Burial ground, St Kilda, Inverness-shire From the 6th to the 8th centuries monks from Ireland were founding monasteries, often within enclosures, on Scotland's west coast. It is likely that some Early Christian settlers came to St Kilda. Cross-incised stones of uncertain date have been found. The present oval burial-ground with a battered, or inwardly inclining wall of 19th-century date, is probably built on the site of Christ Church or Chapel. In 1697 the writer, Martin Martin saw three chapels on St Kilda, each with their own burial-ground. According to the Rev J B Mackenzie (minister from 1829-43) building the graveyard wall was difficult, owing to the different ground levels within and without, and it is probable he retained the approximate shape and size of the earlier enclosure.
