Scope and Content The Radical Road, Holyrood Park, City of Edinburgh In the 1820s a path was built around the foot of Salisbury Crags to provide a route for public enjoyment. The project was financed by a group of friends, including Sir Walter Scott, and it employed out of work weavers from the West of Scotland. The weavers had radical politics, which became well-known, and their memory is enshrined in the name of the pathway. This quickly became a popular walk and it is still a well-used track from which there are magnificent views of the city skyline. Originally, it was intended to plant the base of the Crags along the Radical Road with exotic flowers and shrubs from overseas. Permission was denied, however, by the Keeper of the Park, Lord Haddington, who feared increasing vandalism. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
