Scope and Content The former Falcon Hall, Morningside Road, Morningside, Edinburgh Falcon Hall, designed c.1814 by Thomas Hamilton for Alexander Falconar, stood on the east side of Morningside Road within the Canaan estate. The building incorporated Morningside Lodge, an impressive house built in 1780 for Lord Provost William Coulter. The palatial façade had an imposing entrance portico with 12 great columns of Craigleith stone, flanked on the ground floor by statues of Nelson and Wellington, and decorated with a number of carved stone falcons. The gardens extended over nine acres. Thomas Hamilton, who designed the Royal High School and the Royal College of Physicians, was commissioned by Falconar to build a façade based on the work of John Nash. It had much in common with Nash's design for Buckingham Palace, which it pre-dated. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
