Scope and Content Storehouse, St Kilda Village, Western Isles, from south-east This storehouse is situated at the end of the village nearest the pier. It dates to 1819, is rubble-built, and is two-storeyed with three bays. It has a slated roof. The building was originally used for the storage of goods which were used to pay the rent, such as tweed, feathers, oil and fish, until the late 19th century. In 1804 St Kilda was sold to Colonel Donald MacLeod of Achnagoyle and Colbost. He, and then his son, John MacPherson MacLeod, remained in possession of the islands until 1871. The owner was represented by a factor who came to the island annually to collect the rents from the tenants. The St Kilda group of islands consists of Hirte (often known as St Kilda), Soay, Dun and Boreray. The islands are situated 64km to the west of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides, and are one of the remotest areas in Britain. The largest island, Hirte, is approximately 1,575 acres in extent.
