Scope and Content Ian Hill's House and Sycamore Cottages, The Causeway, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh The Causeway, Duddingston's main street, is a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep's Heid Inn. At the east end of The Causeway, where it makes a sharp turn, is Ian Hill's House, an 18th-century two-storeyed rubble house built right up to the north side of the lane. On the corner are Sycamore Cottages, two 18th-century weavers' cottages. In the 18th century, Duddingston was a busy weaving village, with up to 40 looms producing a coarse linen cloth called 'Duddingston Hardings'. In the 19th century the village became a community of coal-miners and salt-pan workers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
