Scope and Content Sir Walter Scott's Seat, Duddingston Manse, Old Church Lane, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh Duddingston Manse, built in 1805, lies to the east of Duddingston Parish Church behind a high stone wall that runs the length of Old Church Lane. The house looks south over a beautifully wooded garden that leads down to the lochside. This seat, under an old tree in the grounds of the manse, is where, it is said, the author, Sir Walter Scott sat to write part of his novel 'Heart of Midlothian' when he was an occasional visitor to the manse in the early part of the 19th century. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), who lived in Edinburgh, explored the local countryside as well as the Borders, listening to Scottish stories and songs that he later used as material for his poems and immensely popular romantic novels, the Waverley Novels.
